Conversations Ep.6- Griffin & Freilich on Faces Places by Agnes Varda

agnes varda.jpg

This time we review a current film.  Our podcast producer over at Nolascape.org says:

Agnes Varda’s delicious Faces Places (Visages Villages) had a brief run in Zeitgeist, then two showings in the French Film Festival at the Prytania last month. It is available on Amazon download now, for purchase or rental. It is rewarding to see, a few times.

Henry and Jonathan discuss the chemistry between Agnes Varda, with Godard the last of the Nouvelle Vague, and JR – a small woman of 89 years and an active, wiry guy of about 35. JR has a short, high, square van decorated as a giant lens equipped with a photo booth and a printer – I think they are called giclée – that makes poster prints about three feet by five feet that roll out through a  long slot in the side of the van. There is a lot more to this film than the photo van, of course, but making the process immediate and participatory, it catalyzes the interaction. The people are photographed in the booth or in outside scenes, the posters printed and the pasting up done almost immediately with the participation of the subjects and the village. Not just images, the photos are part of an event.

Several of the Agnes Varda films mentioned in the Conversation are on Filmstruck: Murs Murs, Vagabond, Cleo from 5 to 7, La Pointe Courte and Le Bonheur. Filmstruck has 14 Varda films – so far.

I learn a lot from Henry and Jonathan’s discussions, but to get the blend of simplicity and complexity in Faces Places – the visual and emotional charm and challenge of the places, the rapport of JR, who is about 35, and Agnes who is 89, their travels, projects and creative cooperation, somehow mixing successfully with visual and verbal reference to their own works and styles – try to see it.

Anyway, the Tom Paines made their first appearance in years, and I enjoyed it.  The shrimp etoufee also rocked.

That record is still available by the way.  get it on Alex Mcmurray's website...

Made it in to the Downbeat Critics Poll

Strange!... auspicious and perhaps a little suspicious.  I have made it to Rising Star in the guitar category in the Downbeat Critics Poll.   Getting the attention is, as Jeff Albert says in his blog, probably a good thing.  Jeff's article puts it well and points out that Aurora Nealand also made it.  Congratulations to Aurora, Jeff, and... Me!

TaintRadio.org is broadcasting the Freilich Documentary

David Kunian, the author of the radio documentary about some of the exploits of Jonathan Freilich, has requested that you be notified about the airing of the show. It's a rare showing...
PROGRAM NOTE: JONATHAN FRELICH DOCUMENTARY ON taintradio.org

taintradio.org proudly presents producer David Kunian’s excellent documentary, Jonathan Freilich’s Double-O Naked Klezmer Jazz Latin Boogaloo, an hour-long radio documentary about guitarist, composer and bandleader Jonathan Freilich. Freilich founded The New Orleans Klezmer All Stars, the jazz bands Naked on the Floor and avant-garde big band The Naked Orchestra, the rock-steady ska band 007, and the rhythm and blues band Poor Man’s Speedball.

Freilich has been the essence of the working and creative musician in New Orleans. The program explores what this is like and how he accomplishes his goals and ideas. It includes interviews with Freilich, selections from his music, and recollections and interviews from the people who know him and work with him including musicians Stanton Moore, Joe Cabral, Alex McMurray, Ben Ellman, Glen Hartmann, Kevin O’Day, Tim Green, James Singleton, Jeff Albert, Drs. James Walsh and Janna Saslaw, filmmaker Henry Griffin, and producers Mark Bingham and Benjamin Lyons.

The state of recording

The quintet I'm writing for, Dan Oestreicher, Aurora Nealand, Joe Cabral, Doug Garrison, is doing some recording at Dave Pirner's new home studio. It's a bit of parallel guinea pigging; he's trying to get his new studio up and running while we are trying to troubleshoot arrangements with the slightly new sort of syntax I have been writing in.

The conversation turned to whether we are making a record and, it occurred to me that I don't even know what that means anymore. Dave concurred, "What does that mean anymore." We are, nonetheless, still in there recording amidst the building of a new studio. In this time we definitely are make recordings but not records in the old sense. The purpose is clearly different. We are probably moving towards purposelessness or a much more ephemeral, rapidly evaporating type of purpose. Ironically, both Dave and I were at the tail end of whatever that world was; of course, I believe his recording career was somewhat more successful, but in both cases, in those times, there were contracts for making a product, the record.

Now?...how do you even talk about it? We're sitting there talking about making a record (rabbit ears flying everywhere in the air), producer role (more rabbit ears) etc. Dave came to the good conclusion- that now things really are a labor of love; they have to be, or why would we do it?

I'm enjoying it. the guy is a pleasure to work with. I like the "idea" of Dave as a producer. His hearts in it and there's a lot to be excited about; his studio; talented engineer, George; this talented combo messing around with some unusual sounds in a new format with new ears. Creative possibility and outcome looming.

Looking forward to seeing what happens.
